Sense8 Fans Start Petition to Save the Series

Fans of the Netflix original series Sense8 are still fighting to save the show. The recently canceled science fiction drama created by Lana and Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski starred a multinational ensemble cast including Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemelt, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, and Brian J. Smith all playing strangers from different parts of the world who are mentally and emotionally linked.
When it was announced that Sense8 and The Get Down were to share the same fate as Marco Polo, another big-budget Netflix original series that was canceled last year after a two season run, fans were shocked due to the fact that the second season of Sense8 received higher critical and audience acclaim than the first season with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 79 percent from critics and 92 percent from audiences. Despite the praise (and the cliffhanger ending) Netflix still canceled the series, creating quite a stir among its fan base who have been determined to get the series renewed for a third season through petitions. The result of which has seen Netflix penning a statement stating the show is definitely canceled despite the audience’s passion.
Now, a new petition to save Sense8 has appeared on Change.org, demanding answers from Netflix about why the series was canceled. Here is what is stated on the petition:

“The cancellation of Sense 8 – season 3 has been completely unexpected. We don’t know any reasons yet, however it’s quite strange that a show that has received such positive response from a wide and heterogeneous audience, gets cancelled.
Being fans of the series, we would like to know a valid explanation, arguing why “Sense 8″ has been cancelled. We believe it is necessary that tv shows and movies which, from its content, provide the world with a message of love, diversity and respect. All these values have been brought to life by the characters of the show, and the message it has is extremely important for society.
We understand whatever the reasons could have been, yet we believe that as a visual product, Sense 8 does have all these values we recognize, and has perfectly managed to trasmit it to the viewers. It is not just a tv show, to watch for fun, instead of just being that, Sense 8 has given the world a new way of seeing others: with acceptance, love and understanding.”

While it was already confirmed by Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos that the series was just too expensive to produce with too small of an audience base — the series was filmed in eight different locations including Chicago, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Seoul, Reykjavík, Mexico City, Nairobi and Mumbai for the first season and added Amsterdam, Argyll, Chippenham, Los Angeles, Malta, Positano, Redwoods, and São Paulo for the second. In addition to such a worldly setting, the series also had a massive budget of $4.5 million per episode for season 1 and $9 million per episode for season 2.
Despite the cost of production and, according to Sarandos, the small audience, fans of Sense8 are still fighting to save their show. Even though it looks like Sense8 is officially done, we are going to have to wait and see if this latest petition proves fruitful to the dedicated fan base.
